The Moon is Going Green
Moonfest had a waste diversion rate of 95.6%!
Moonfest 2009 took place on Sunday, July 19, 2009 at the NASA Ames Research Center. The event was NASA Ames' first zero waste event.
Thank you to all who helped make this possible, including those listed below, and a special thanks to Leah Lowrie for her consultation for this event. Please see the Final Report for Event Zero Waste Efforts for more information.

What does celebrating the Moon and NASA have to do with "Going Green"? Many things!
First, the Apollo missions helped jumpstart the environmental movement many years ago. This started with two impactful images of our planet: Apollo 8's "Earthrise" picture, and the first full picture of an illuminated Earth, commonly termed the "Blue Marble," taken by Apollo 17 crew.
Second, NASA is actively engaged in activities that leverage NASA's talents for a Greener Earth. NASA Greenspace is a major initiative out of NASA Ames that highlights this and will be exhibiting at Moonfest.
In the spirit the space-environment connection, Moonfest is making a conscious effort to be environmentally responsible. Below are some of the organizations sponsoring the Green efforts at Moonfest in this spirit.
San Jose Conservation Corp & Green Waste

The San Jose Conservation Corp and Green Waste are working together to lead our recycling and composting efforts. All waste from the event will be sorted into various streams, and students from the San Jose Conservation Corp will teach you how to do this! Green Waste is collecting and transporting the compost to be processed into nutrient rich soil.
Moon Connection When we go to the Moon, we'll need to minimize and recycle waste productions. More information here.
Akeena Solar

Akeena Solar will provide solar-powered energy generators to Moonfest to power our exhibitors and activities. You can learn more about their work and benefit from this clean energy!
Moon Connection Solar power is the primary source for NASA's missions today. More information here.
World Centric

World Centric will provide biodegradable food service items which will be used throughout Moonfest, so the cups, utensils, and other service ware you use can be composted after you enjoy your refreshments!
